Tending the Fire Within: Therapy Groups for Men

Rob Schene has been leading men’s groups for over 15 years, offering spaces where men can explore the challenges they face but often keep hidden. He currently facilitates groups that focus on emotional intimacy, healthy ways to navigate anger and conflict, confronting loneliness, reclaiming personal power, grieving losses, and redefining authentic masculinity.

The groups emphasize vulnerability, reflection, and connection through a depth-oriented, relational approach. Over time, the work may include discussions and rituals about patriarchy and cultural narratives shaping male identity. Participants support each other as they explore their unique experiences of manhood, building resilience, purpose, and compassion.

Rob is a certified group therapist who has taught at the California Institute of Integral Studies and has guided men through rites of passage work. His facilitation is informed by a commitment to spiritual practice—not tied to any doctrine, but centered on presence and connection to something greater. His approach invites men to engage with their values and inner life with openness and heart.

In Real Life (IRL)
Men's Groups

Men's Therapy Directory members Brian Thompson and Troy Piwowarski co-founded In Real Life (IRL) Men's Groups to provide consistent transformative spaces for men to get the support and feedback necessary to clean up, grow up and deepen into the life you want.

They have 8 ongoing groups that meet in Berkeley and online weekly.

Their groups offer opportunities for men to explore relational patterns, give and receive authentic feedback, and try out new ways of being in the company of a trusted group of men.

Brian and Troy are Certified Group Psychotherapists. Their groups are as real as it gets. They cut straight to the heart of authentic communication, integrating your shadow/unconscious, navigating conflict and transgenerational healing. Some of their groups attend an annual 3-day retreat where you'll go even deeper. Groups are open to cis and trans men of all sexual orientations.

While most of their groups are full, with 8 groups, there are often opportunities to jump in. See their website for more details.
